ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

OF THE EXTERNAL EXAMINER

The External examiner should have experience of academic institutions and professional practice and is expected to have a sound understanding of the role and responsibilities including:

  • Sufficient standing and experience to command authority and respect of academic and professional peers.

  • Knowledge and understanding of UK national benchmarks for maintaining academic standards and an understanding of fair and equal learning outcomes for all students.

  • Relevant academic and/or professional qualifications to at least the level of the qualification being externally examined.

  • Awareness with the standard expected of students to achieve the award that is to be examined and experience in enhancing the student learning experience.

  • Competence and experience relating to the design and operation of a variety of assessment tasks appropriate to the subject, sufficient recent examining/assessment experience preferably as an External examiner.

The External examiner is expected to confirm:

  • The quality of the programme is appropriate to meet the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) criteria for accepting Betonica graduates into the membership as practising Medical Herbalists.

  • Standards are appropriate for the award of Herbal Medicine Diploma and that student performance is assessed against these standards.

  • Assessment is conducted in a fair manner for all students

  • There is evidence that students are sufficiently challenged in their academic learning and the teaching programme continually developed.
