I am studying with Betonica as I love that nature has the answers to helping the body heal itself and the course gives the us the tools and experience for a holistic and educated approach to Herbal Medicine.

My background is in environmental social science so herbalism brings together my interests in the natural world, environmental sustainability, social justice, and integrating diverse forms of knowledge. I'm looking forward to learning about the possibilities plant medicine offers for holistic approaches to health.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

  • To accurately represent the views of students in their year of study on all matters relating to the Medical Herbalist Training Programme (MHTP).

    • To continuously improve the student learning experience in partnership with Betonica staff by helping to constructively offer solutions to problems.

    • To provide both positive and negative feedback to staff at relevant meetings in a constructive manner.

    • To communicate feedback and responses to students from staff after the relevant meetings.

    • Increasing inclusivity (see below)

  • To gather feedback on a termly basis

    • To attend the termly Student Rep Meetings

    • Be accessible to peer members in the group

The Student Representative serves a one-year term for Betonica, representing the year which they are a member of. They must then take a break of at least 1 year to allow others to take responsibility. The Student Rep may hold the role more than once in non-consecutive years.

Meetings are usually arranged at in-person seminars, though in necessary circumstances they may need to be held online.

The Reps usually use a digital form (e.g. Google forms) to gather feedback from their peers and this is independently gathered and managed. New student reps can ask the old student rep which methods they found best.

The student rep, along with their Head of Year, should also aim to increase inclusivity. Please actively seek to notice if any students seem lonely, isolated or excluded from groups and encourage their inclusion. Flagging any wellbeing concerns to the Course Leader or Head of Year. The student rep will also interact with the Student Diversity & Inclusion Working Group as and when needed.

Other roles that may be appropriate if the rep wishes:

    • Organising student social events

    • Supporting study group organisation

  • Students must collate feedback from their year to bring to the meeting:

    • Please say how many out of the cohort responded to the feedback (e.g. 28 out of 30 filled in feedback forms).

    • Do read and summarize the feedback to collate the 2 main priorities from the class with 2 potential solutions (with numbers: for example 6 students requested this). It is useful to see pie charts of feedback where appropriate, if you feel that works for you.

    • Also bring positive feedback and things that are working well.

    • If there is strong feedback for more than two issues, speak first to your Head of Year.
