CREATING A

HEALTHY FEEDBACK CULTURE

What is feedback culture?

Feedback culture is an inclusive and supportive environment in which our students and staff alike feel free, safe, and genuinely encouraged to share and receive healthy feedback in an open and respectful manner. This positive and nurturing culture can thrive in a variety of settings, whether it be within the classroom, personal academic tutorials, or in any other environment where students and staff are given the essential space and opportunity to communicate their diverse perspectives, insights, and evaluations of different situations without the fear of retribution or negative consequences. Feedback can be directed towards fellow students, staff members, or even at the school’s course materials, processes, and the overarching school itself, thereby fostering a continuous cycle of improvement and meaningful learning experiences for everyone involved in the educational journey.

The key to giving and receiving feedback effectively lies in the cultivation of a culture that emphasises both transparency and trust. This involves being honest and open with your thoughts and feelings, while also committing to listen actively and empathetically to the diverse perspectives of others. We can achieve this by concentrating on shared goals and aligning our efforts, communicating clearly about expectations, and creating a safe space for productive dialogue regarding what is working well and where there may be opportunities for improvement.

Another vital component of healthy feedback is the essential practice of kindness and compassion. Feedback should always be delivered in a respectful and considerate manner, without any judgment or blame directed at the recipient. Additionally, it is crucial to remember that feedback is not intended to shame or criticise individuals in any way – rather, it should be viewed as an invaluable opportunity for personal growth and self-reflection. By embracing this approach to feedback, we can cultivate a more healthy and productive environment in which constructive feedback is genuinely valued, embraced, and appreciated by everyone involved in the process.

Betonica is wholeheartedly dedicated to the pursuit of developing a robust and healthy feedback culture, and this is certainly not an endeavour that happens overnight or without intention. It requires significant time, unwavering commitment, collaboration among all of Betonica’s staff and students, and ongoing adjustments to effectively build, implement, and nurture this cohesive way of working together. However, we firmly believe that the myriad benefits accrued for both our dedicated staff and enthusiastic students are undoubtedly well worth the considerable effort invested into this vital and important initiative.

FEEDBACK GUIDELINES

  • Growth-infused feedback is not only about offering simple praise or providing criticism. Instead, its primary purpose is to reach a specific, desired outcome that ultimately fosters both personal and professional growth in the recipient. This process involves a thoughtful and constructive exchange that encourages deep reflection, meaningful learning, and continuous improvement, promoting a culture of development and support.

  • Healthy feedback intentionally leaves personal judgments, biases, or subjective interpretations out of the feedback conversation. The main thing to note is that we should avoid rushing to conclusions without sufficient discussions and evidence.

  • Regardless of whether it’s positive or negative feedback, details matter significantly. Details enable us to understand exactly which specific actions are appreciated by our students and staff, or not, in order to do more of the same or correct what is not working effectively.

This deeper understanding helps us develop a a valuable roadmap for improvement and growth moving forward.

  • Please note that the additional feedback shared via the form provided below is carefully reviewed one month after the end of each term, and we will respond at that time. If you require a quicker response or have urgent concerns, please make use of the other available feedback channels, such as reaching out to your Head of Year or Personal Academic Tutor, or email admin@betonica.co.uk who are ready to assist you.

2024 - 2025 academic year

  • Betonica's Director, Nadine Provenzano, has kindly taken the initiative to build and generously donate this new Learning Platform to Betonica. This development comes as a direct response to the feedback received from students during the last academic year regarding the previous Learning Platform.

This new platform's layout and navigation function is designed with care and intention, and it will hopefully assist all the students who felt overwhelmed by the vast amount of information they had to sift through and find on the previous Learning Platform.

Each cohort now has all of the relevant course information and essential course materials that are pertinent to their specific year, carefully organised and contained within their individual year course structure. This ensures that students have convenient access to everything they need in order to effectively navigate through their studies without having to search all over the Learning Platform.

There is a new navigation function implemented, which means that all students will now be able to easily view and access what is included within the various pages designated for their specific year of studies. By simply clicking on the course overview or selecting the new navigation function. To initiate this new feature, click on the three lines/three dots icon located at the top right corner of the course pages.

There is also a new course progression function that has been implemented to assist students in keeping track of their progress.
